British prisoner changes sex but then changes mind

A British prisoner who transferred from a men's jail to a women's facility after changing sex has opted to swap gender -- and prisons -- again.

John Pilley was granted permission in 1999 to have a sex change, the procedure taking place two years later after which, as Jane Anne Pilley, he was moved to Holloway women's prison in London.

However, the 54-year-old, serving a life sentence for attempted murder and kidnapping, has decided to become a man again, The Times newspaper reported.

Pilley was waiting to have the new operation, again to be carried out by Britain's state National Health Service, after which he will be transferred back to a men's prison, the paper said.

"Although it is not unheard of, it is very rare indeed for people to have regrets and want to change back," Christine Burns of Press for Change, a pressure group for transsexual rights, said of the new operation.

Pilley, who underwent seven years of hormone treatment before the first operation, was initially refused permission to change sex but won his case after taking legal advice.

Before moving prison he was allowed to wear womens clothing in his cell at night and mens clothes during the day, The Times said.

Woman offers her dead body for display

A Toronto woman, not content with having merely a dusty demise, has become the first Canadian to donate her body for public display after she dies.

The 30-year-old mutual fund worker said the "Body Worlds" exhibition at the Ontario Science Center, which displays real human bodies, would fulfill her desire to have a posthumous purpose.

"I wanted to donate my body to science, but do something a little bit different, so this was perfect," said Stephanie Chapu, citing the educational value of the exhibits.

"Being buried or cremated -- why get rid of your body that way when you can do something else and be useful?"

Chapu said community reaction has been mixed, with friends and family mostly supportive, though some have raised religious or moral objections.

"They have the right to think that, but they should also respect my decision," she said. "I understand it's not for everybody."

More than 16 million people worldwide have viewed the traveling exhibition, organized by the German Institute for Plastination, which houses more than 6,000 donated cadavers, a spokeswoman said.

The exhibits are preserved through plastination, a technique where water and fat in the soft tissue are replaced with plastic polymers.

Whole body specimens are displayed, which reveal bones, muscle, tendons, nerves, blood vessels and organs. Among the exhibits are embryos, fetuses and a pregnant woman who died with her fetus in her womb.

"I like that you can finally see what we look like on the inside in a very tasteful manner. I don't think it's disrespectful at all to the donors," said Chapu.

The exhibition has stirred controversy in the past, with German media alleging some of the bodies were those of Chinese execution victims. The organizers have denied the reports.

Woman Who Dressed As Aunt Jemima Banned From Council Meetings

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- An activist who was arrested after disrupting a City Council meeting in an Aunt Jemima costume has been banned by the council president from attending meetings until the end of March.

Brown was arrested and charged with causing a disturbance at a lawful assembly and resisting a police officer.

Jackie Brown was escorted out of a Nov. 22 City Council meeting after loudly criticizing the council for the city's small business incentive law.

Brown, president of the Jacksonville Coalition of Black Contractors, said the law treats blacks like "slaves" because it does not provide enough opportunities for minority contractors.

She returned during a later public comment period and scuffled with a police officer after refusing to leave when ordered.

Brown was arrested and charged with causing a disturbance at a lawful assembly and resisting a police officer.

A letter this week from Council President Kevin Hyde informing Brown she cannot attend council meetings until March 31 cites a rule that allows the council to remove disruptive citizens from meetings.

Bill Sheppard, Brown's attorney, did not immediately return a message early Friday.
